This is a step-by-step instruction book on Animal Assisted Therapy activities for children that can be used in individual treatment as well as in groups. This book is intended for use by therapists working with children in a therapeutic orschool setting. Each activity is designed with certain objectives in mind to target social emotional growth in children.
It is important that a screened and certified therapy animal is used during the activities and that agreed upon guidelines are being followed with the licensing agency. Animals are living creatures and their safety is very important. Never bring an animal into an environment that is unsafe for it. Know the animals stress signals and make sure that it is in good health when they accompany the facilitator to therapy sessions. Never overwork an animal, as they don’t have a voice and cannot tell you when they are exhausted. Please review mutual safety concerns with the child when they will be working with the animal.
In some of these activities, I have a therapy animal as an important part of the session, even though they are not listed in the actual conducting of the activity. In this case, the animal is accompanying the child and offering support while the child discusses their feelings with the therapist.
